- Roskam says family first – Kerry Lester
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Today, Elizabeth is a stay-at-home mother to their four children – daughters Gracey and Frankie, and sons A.J. and Steven. She’s also one of her husband’s closest political advisers, says Al Salvi, Roskam’s former law partner and statehouse colleague. Yet, she stays clearly behind the scenes. Elizabeth has never given an interview to the press, according to Roskam’s communications staff, and a request was declined for this story. Still, she has been a noted presence by her husband’s side. At a 2006 fundraiser with Laura Bush in Addison, Elizabeth stole the show. She told stories about the couple’s history and talked up Peter as a family man, saying he displayed infinite patience teaching their then 16-year-old daughter Gracey how to drive. She even fit in a few political jabs at Roskam’s opponent, Democrat Tammy Duckworth of Hoffman Estates. Roskam often affectionately describes her as “the real right wing conservative in the Roskam household.”)
- DIERSEN HEADLINE: Daily Herald calls for Cronin to call for all the DuPage Housing Board members to resign. According to the DuPage County website (http://www.dupageco.org/cobrd/generic.cfm?doc_id=4668), they are Woodrow Broaders, Arthur Donner, Pamela Fenner, William Maio, Jr., Edward Merkel, and Thomas Myers, Jr. The DuPage County Authority is on Roosevelt Road in walking distance of my home. Maybe the Daily Herald will call for Cronin to appoint me to the DuPage Housing Board. Just kidding, but not completely.

(DIERSEN: At a big Republican political meeting not long before George Ryan issued his pardons, during the question and answer period after the speaker had finished, I voiced my concern to the speaker that George Ryan might issue the pardons. At the time, the locals were punishing me big time because I supported Pat O’Malley instead of Jim Ryan in the Republican gubernatorial primary. As usual, the punishment included demonizing and denigrating my judgment. Therefore, the speaker had no choice but to disagree with me. The speaker had no choice but to state that he believed that George Ryan would NOT issue any pardons. Of course, the subsequent pardons made the speaker look bad. After that, the speaker’s handlers and his lieutenants did everything they could to stop me from asking the speaker questions.)

- If there is ‘no’ inflation, why are Medicare premiums going up? – Terry Savage
(DIERSEN: One of the reasons why I succumbed to my liberal Democrat GAO superiors in 1997 and retired early was that my federal pension would be adjusted for inflation each year. Because that promise was broken and because federal health insurance premiums continue to skyrocket, I will have $2,400 less to spend this year than in 2009 and I predict that I will have $3,400 less to spend in 2012 than in 2009.)
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This column is devoted to making sense out of money issues. But some money topics seem to defy logic. And, not surprisingly, most of those illogical money issues revolve around government actions. I’m always wondering how they get away with this stuff. 1. No Social Security benefits increase, because of “no” inflation. But Medicare premiums set to rise 4.6 percent! The government doesn’t think there’s any inflation around. Here’s the Social Security website, explaining why there will be no cost-of-living increase in benefits for Social Security recipients in 2011. As determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is no increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of 2008, the last year a COLA was determined, to the third quarter of 2010. No inflation in the past two years? Where do they live?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: While the state has several effective tools to collect child support, such as income withholding and garnisheeing wages, enforcement can still be difficult. Among the challenges are finding the parent obligated to pay. “The person changes jobs or they move out of state, or they work using a different Social Security number, or they get paid in cash, or they’re a part of the underground economy,” said Zeophus Williams, supervisor of the Child Support Enforcement Division of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. “All of those issues come into play.” “A lot have left the jurisdiction,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “Sometimes the names are aliases.” His office and the DuPage County Sheriff’s office teamed up last month to target 42 men in DuPage County who collectively owe more than $2 million in back support. But only 12 of the 42 sought were located and arrested.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A move to abolish township road districts appears to be stalled for now. That doesn’t mean township officials still aren’t concerned about the idea. State Senate Bill 1811, which would abolish all township road districts with less than 100 miles of road, is in the process of being reassigned to a committee in Springfield. State Sen. Kirk Dillard, whose 24th District includes Naperville, said that means the measure is probably dead for this session of the General Assembly, although he noted there “are always ways to get around that.” Dillard said he is not in favor of the bill. “In general, the local townships do a good job,” he said.)

(DIERSEN: I can sympathize with Scott Powers, but certain candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, conservative leaders, reporters, etc., and their operatives have treated me far worse than Biden’s operatives treated Powers. I have been the GOPUSA Illinois editor since 2000. Some day I will write an article, or maybe a book, on how candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, conservative leaders, reporters, etc., and their operatives have treated me.)
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Veteran reporter Scott Powers went to cover a fundraiser headlined by Vice President Joe Biden – and ended up being “imprisoned” in a closet by the veep’s staffers. “They gave me a bottle of water and shut the door,” said Powers. While Biden’s team has apologized, they’ve only said they’re sorry they didn’t have a better “hold room” for Powers. The Orwellian incident happened on Wednesday, March 23, when Powers, 51, was assigned to be the pool reporter for Biden’s fundraiser for Sen. Bill Nelson at the palatial home in Orlando of developer and philanthropist Alan Ginsburg. More than 150 guests had paid at least $500 a head to listen to speeches by Biden and Nelson. They enjoyed a buffet of caprese crostini with oven dried mozzarella and basil, rosemary flatbed with grapes, honey and gorgonzola cheese and bacon deviled eggs, followed by a lunch of grilled chicken Caesar. Powers, a highly regarded veteran staff reporter on the Orlando Sentinel, arrived expecting, as usual, to be able to mingle and chat with the guests, many of whom he knew. But he got a rude shock. “One of Biden’s staffers, a young woman of about 23 or 24, met me at the door, led me through the party, then said, ‘We want you to wait here until the vice president arrives,’” he told Newsmax. “‘Here’ was basically a storage closet. It was about 8-feet-by-10 feet with shelves full of stuff and boxes and baskets piled up all over the place. There was an old desk in one corner with files and papers all over it – and just enough room for one chair close by the door to sit on. “They gave me a bottle of water and shut the door. “I was puzzled, but assumed this was only going to last a few minutes. Instead, it went on for an hour and 15 minutes. “I put my head out five or six times and asked what was going on, but each time another young woman staffer who was guarding the door told me, ‘I’ll let you know when you can come out.’ “They were obviously waiting until Biden and Sen. Nelson were actually on the podium – and didn’t want me to speak to a soul at the fundraiser.” Powers was finally escorted out of the closet to listen to the non-headline-making speeches by Biden and Nelson. “But as soon as the speeches finished, the female staffers escorted me back to the closet and told me, ‘You’ll have to wait here till the motorcade clears,’” he told Newsmax. “Finally after another 15 minutes they let me out and walked with me to my car – making sure I was on my way.” During his confinement, Powers took a picture of the crowded interior of the closet and emailed it to his editor. “Should I have made a scene?” he wonders. “Maybe – but I was more concerned with thinking how the hell I was going to get a story without talking to people. “As far as I’m concerned, Joe Biden is the first politician who’s kept reporters and fundraiser guests apart.” Ironically, says Powers, he knew many of the well-heeled guests and would have had no problem talking to them. And two days later, after news of the bizarre incident spread, he got a call from the embarrassed host of the fundraiser, Alan Ginsburg. “He said he was very sorry – he had no idea I’d been confined in the closet,” said Powers. Vice President Joe Biden’s spokeswoman apologized after Newsmax and other outlets reported that his staff had bundled a reporter off into a closet during a fundraising last week, preventing him from interviewing guests at a Florida mansion. But instead of addressing the issue head on, Biden fell into campaign speak, calling the small closet a “hold room.” “Scott – You have our sincere apologies for the lack of a better hold room today,” wrote Vice President Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander last Wednesday to Orlando Sentinel reporter Scott Powers.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pressed on “Fox News Sunday” about his adulterous past, Newt Gingrich said it was not hypocritical for him to impeach Bill Clinton while he cheated on his own wife because he never lied under oath. “I don’t know what you would have had me do,” he said, getting a little testy, “because. . .the president of the United States [was] committing perjury. Remember, he’s a lawyer! This was not some accidental thing. And I thought the outcome was about right.” The all-but-official candidate for the Republican presidential nomination granted that his own extramarital affairs will be an issue in the coming campaign, but he sounded hopeful that voters will, if they don’t forgive or forget, at least look the other way. “We’ll find out six months or a year from now whether people are forgiving and whether they put in context events that are 10 and 15 years old,” Gingrich said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: One huge key to the political fallout from Wisconsin’s bitter budget fight will be the voting behavior of public employees this year and next. Will they vote in higher numbers than before? Will they vote in higher numbers against Republicans? And finally, how much voting power do public employees actually wield?)
MIAMI HERALD
- DIERSEN HEADLINE: While government employers have dramatically lowered their hiring and other employment standards to facilitate hiring, retaining, and promoting young minorities and young females, government hiring and employment standards remain dramatically higher than in the private sector. The federal government has the highest hiring and employment standards, next is state government, next is county government, next is township government, next is municipal government, and last is the private sector. Very few people today could meet the hiring standards that a) the Post Office had in 1966, b) IRS had in 1971, and c) GAO had in 1980.)

(DIERSEN: I earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976.)
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mark Twain once said, “I have never let schooling interfere with my education.” For the College Republicans at Loyola University of Chicago, that bit of wisdom has been a saving grace. After months of struggle in diligent pursuit of that First Amendment staple – freedom of speech – Loyola’s College Republicans finally got their wish: for Karl Rove to speak on-campus. The former White House Advisor to President George W. Bush had been barred from speaking by university administrators at the campus since last October. Being denied the right to have the speaker of their choice has taught Loyola’s Republican students some important life lessons: Rule: 1: There are different rules that apply if you are a Republican or a conservative. Rule 2: Don’t be fooled by some romanticized notion of higher learning and the free exchange of ideas. Rule 3: Do not expect to be treated fairly. Then it will be of no surprise when you are not. Rule 4: Why are you being treated unfairly? See Rule 1. “This has been one big rollercoaster but the College Republicans didn’t give up,” said Matthew Noto, President of Loyola College Republicans. “As soon as I started, this was my biggest mission. We all got back on our feet and we all said we are going to back to the drawing board and we are going to get him to come.” Human Events and Fox News also called the school out on its censorship. The blogosphere chimed in and, at long last, Rove suddenly found himself re-invited to speak. He even received a standing ovation – as much for him as for the students’ victory in overcoming the school’s hypocrisy.)

These “Republican” leaders are really Democrats or worse who are moral relativists who believe that their end justifies their means. They blame conservatives, that is, platform Republicans, that is, the base of the IRP for the IRP’s problems. They demonize and denigrate conservatives as being a bunch kooks and extremists.)

(DIERSEN: In the federal government, the experience that you gain doing a job at each grade level is recognized by pay increases call “step increases.” As a GS-12 IRS Revenue Officer, I got step increases in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979. I spent those pay increases on the things that improved my job skills. I spent those pay increases on tuition and books at Loyola, DePaul, and the Becker CPA Review. I earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, and I earned a masters degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980. What percent of private sector employees have bachelors degrees, graduate degrees, and professional certifications? The percentage is far far far lower in the private sector than in the federal government.)

(DIERSEN: Beyond outrageously, the Department of Transportation (DOT) exempts manufactures from certifying the mileage of vehicles they sell dealers. My lawsuit — David J. Diersen v. Chicago Car Exchange, Inc., 110 F.3d 481 (7th Cir. 1997), cert. denied, 118 S.Ct. 178 (1997) — at least temporally, stopped DOT from doing that. SEE: http://www.diersen.com/odometer.html)
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “What the Sell?,” TLC’s latest iteration of expert-meets-novice, hard-times entertainment, comes to us from executive producers Brent Montgomery and Colby Gaines. Decidedly less gritty than “Pawn Stars,” the duo’s previous show in which compulsive gamblers and down-and-out Vegas types hawk their jewelry for quick cash, “What the Sell?” is set in the well-to-do Chicago suburb of Wheaton, Illinois, a far cry from Sin City, to be sure. At The Perfect Thing, a 9,000 square-foot antiques emporium, Judy, her adult daughter, Kate, and Judy’s elderly mother, Gloria, cater to a wholesome clientele looking to unload an eclectic array of hand-me-downs and heirlooms. Led by Judy, the multi-generational, matrilineal proprietors are personable enough, in a Midwestern kind of way, but beneath all their folksy aphorisms and familial rapport is the inescapable fact that the three women are making a living off the people who come through the front door. The problem is, you’re never quite sure who you’re rooting for as Kate and her partners haggle over such booty as a Nick Klein rocking horse made of actual pony hide, a 10-million-year-old dinosaur egg, or a Turkmenistan bridal headdress.)
DAVID JOHN DIERSEN
(FROM THE ARTICLE: David J. Diersen v. Chicago Car Exchange, Inc., 110 F.3d 481 (7th Cir. 1997), cert. denied, 118 S.Ct. 178 (1997) is a lawsuit that involved the Federal Odometer Act (FOA), the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) authority to grant exemptions from the FOA, and the sufficiency of material facts that would make a dealer suspicious of a car’s mileage. On December 21, 1995, Judge Suzanne B. Conlon, United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, granted the Chicago Car Exchange summary judgment on the assumption that the exemption that the DOT had granted sellers of old cars was valid. Diersen appealed that decision to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin). On September 16, 1996, Diersen presented oral arguments to Chief Judge Posner and Circuit Court Judges Coffey and Kanne. On March 31, 1997, the Appellate Court ruled that DOT’s exemption for old cars was invalid, but the Appellate Court nevertheless affirmed the District Court’s summary judgment on other grounds. On May 13, 1997, the Appellate Court denied Diersen’s motion for rehearing. On August 5, 1997, Diersen filed a petition for writ of certiorari with the Supreme Court of the United States. On October 6, 1997, the Supreme Court denied Diersen’s petition. The Appellate Court accepted Diersen’s argument that DOT’s old car exemption was invalid because DOT did not have authority to grant such exemptions. However, Diersen understands that subsequently, a) Congress and the Clinton Administration acquiesced to the wishes of the automobile and truck manufacturers and dealers and their lobbyists, amended the FOA, and gave DOT the exemption authority it lacked and b) DOT reissued all the exemptions that it had previously granted including exemptions for sellers of old cars and heavy trucks and for manufactures of cars and trucks. The following is Diersen’s discussion of the extremely unfortunate impact of the litigation on car buyers. His discussion is followed by his Supreme Court petition.)
