GUN OWNERS OF AMERICA “PROUD” TO ENDORSE CONGRESSMAN WALSH
For Immediate Release            Contact: Justin Roth
November 10, 2011           JustinRoth@yahoo.com
Earlier this week, the nation’s second-largest Second Amendment organization announced its endorsement of Congressman Joe Walsh (R-McHenry).  In announcing the endorsement, Gun Owners of America Vice Chairman Tim Macy said, “Congressman Walsh is a leader on Second Amendment issues, plain and simple.  When it comes to defending the right to keep and bear arms, Joe Walsh is at the forefront of the battle and was the clear choice in our decision to endorse.”  The Gun Owners of American has been described by Congressman Ron Paul (T-TX) as, “the only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington.”
“During his long tenure as an elected figure, Randy Hultgren has shown little interest in upholding gun rights,” said Macy. “Walsh, on the other hand, is a true defender of the Second Amendment who in his short time in Congress has already become a leading voice for gun owners all across America.”Rep. Walsh is a cosponsor of two concealed carry reciprocity bills in the U.S. House, and he recently chided his own state for trampling the gun rights of its citizens.

“We are an embarrassment (in Illinois),” Walsh said. “We are the last state standing when it comes to concealed carry.” Although Illinois is the only state that will not benefit from congressional legislation, Walsh hopes that the passage of national reciprocity will spur his state to action.

Recently, the freshman Congressman became the first member of Congress to officially call for Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation because of the growing Fast and Furious scandal. More than 30 members of Congress have since joined the call for Holder to step down.

“The American people deserve to know the truth regarding Attorney General Eric Holder’s knowledge and role in the Fast and Furious operation,” said Walsh in a statement.  “This program was deliberately designed to attack law-abiding American gun owners and gun dealers. Why else would an anti-gun Administration force licensed firearms dealers to sell guns to violent criminals?”

“Our gun rights frequently come under attack in Washington,” said GOA’s Mr. Macy. “Gun owners and sportsmen around the country have a trusted friend in Congressman Walsh.

“Gun Owners of America is proud to make this endorsement, and we encourage friends of the Second Amendment from Illinois and around the country to stand with Rep. Walsh with their encouragement and financial support as well.”

Congressman Walsh reacted to the endorsement by saying, “I am pleased to have the support of this wonderful organization and I will continue to be a tireless advocate for the Second Amendment, which I believe to be the most important amendment in the Bill of Rights.”

This endorsement comes on the heels of the congressman receiving the Family Research Council’s “True Blue” Award for maintaining a 100% Pro-Family voting record, as well as earning a 95% ranking on the Heritage Foundation’s Legislative Scorecard, which recognizes those members of Congress who are “fighting for freedom, opportunity, prosperity and civil society.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE
— First battles for ’12 elections fought in the precincts – Brenda Schory
http://www.kcchronicle.com/2011/11/09/first-battles-for-12-elections-fought-in-the-precincts/aug5yw9/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As Republican committeeman of the First Precinct in St. Charles, Sondra Hecox has already been out walking the walk and talking the talk. Hecox, 75, said she will take one side of the street and her husband, Dale, 80, will take the other and they will hit every house, every door. Frequently they will cover another precinct or two if their help is needed.

“We pass out literature,” Hecox said. “We’ve done a ton of that. We are collecting signatures for all the candidates who are running who gave us petitions.”

Hecox has been precinct committeeman for six years, and she served as assistant committeeman for 14 years, regularly educating and registering voters, helping people get to the polls and serving as a poll watcher on election days. “I really, really believe it’s our responsibility as precinct committeemen,” Hecox said. Christopher Faber, 32, a North Aurora trustee and Democratic precinct committeeman in the 11th Precinct of Batavia, said he also walks the precinct to get votes out for their candidates.

“I communicate with candidates,” Faber said. “I drop off their stuff. I call people to remind them to vote. I’ve talked to a few to recruit them to the Democratic side.”

As the big guns line up for political battle in the 2012 election season, the first battles are fought in the precincts, with committeemen from each party. But not every precinct has a Hecox or Faber willing to give it a full-out effort. This is something Mark Guthle, chairman of the Kane County Democratic Central Committee, and Mike Kenyon, a Republican county board member from South Elgin and chairman of the county GOP, can agree on.

“A precinct committeeman is what you bring to the table,” Guthle said. “Are you going to do something, or are you a name on a piece of paper? We have enough [committeemen] in our county, but how many actually do work their precincts?” Kane County has a vacancy rate of almost 40 percent for Republican precinct committeemen, said Doug Ibendahl, editor of Republican News Watch, an online commentary of GOP news.

Kane County has 299 precincts. In 2010, only 181 precincts had a candidate for Republican precinct committeeman. No Republican ran in 118 precincts, he said. Ibendahl’s website, www.republicannewswatch.com, hosts the Republican Precinct Project, urging  people to get involved as committeemen. All that is required is 10 signatures to get on a ballot. If no one runs, the party chairman for the county appoints someone.

“Where is everybody?” Ibendahl said. “Kane’s vacancy rate is not the worst at 39.5 percent, but it should be hard to find a precinct in Kane and say there are no good Republicans there.”  Ibendahl is a Chicago attorney and former General Counsel of the Illinois Republican Party and served on the Bush-Cheney legal team in Florida during the 2000 Presidential recount. Ibendahl’s goal is for a committeeman to take the helm of every one of the 6,705 precincts in Illinois. He said full participation in these two-year volunteer positions is critical for the success of Republican candidates – and for taking back the White House.

“They are the front line ambassadors for the party,” Ibendahl said. “They are the only party official that the average person will ever meet – they are not going to meet Mitt Romney or Herman Cain.”

He ticked off a list of responsibilities for a good committeeman – dropping off literature, collecting signatures, registering people to vote and helping them get to the polls – describing exactly what Faber and the Hecoxes do.

“We’re the ones losing elections,” Ibendahl said of Republicans. “How did [Gov. Pat] Quinn win the election when every poll leading up to the election for weeks, showed Bill Brady winning? Pat Quinn pulled it out because the Democrats do it better with boots on the ground. They’ve got teachers, unions, police and fire …  the problem with the Republican Party is the country club types and company CEOs are not, by and large, knocking on doors.”

The Republican Precinct Project is geared to have the GOP match what the Democrats do in getting boots on the ground, he said.

“They have a huge army they rally every election,” Ibendahl said. “Republicans would rather sit around and complain. We’ve got less than a month to go now. People have until the close of business on Dec. 5 to file nominating petitions to be precinct committeeman.”

Kenyon said the blank spots among Republican precinct committeemen are largely in Elgin and Aurora, with only a few vacancies in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles townships. “I go to people I know and ask them, and when I see somebody, I call and ask,” Kenyon said. “It’s similar to trying to get somebody to do something anywhere else. Why are there fewer Lions and Jaycees and Rotarians? Nobody wants to do anything.”  And sometimes, there is a precinct committeeman who fills a space and then does nothing to build the party. “There’s not much you can do about that,” Kenyon said. “If anybody is elected, you cannot get rid of them unless they resign.

If a committeeman is not doing their job, and you want to put somebody else in there, they’ll tell you to go pound sand. If you have a committeeman that moves out of state or out of town, he still has to write a letter to [the county clerk] to resign.”

A review of precinct committeemen elected in the last cycle shows more vacancies among Democrats than Republicans, but Guthle said he’s not worried. “I can attest to this, the Democrats are making gains in the county through precinct committeemen in Aurora, Elgin and Dundee,” Guthle said. “In 2012, we will get more in this cycle and fill it up. It’s not a number on a ballot. We are looking for people who want to work and volunteer their time, walk the precinct, talk to people and get signatures for candidates.” Faber agreed. “Republicans have control around these parts, but the Democrats have control of the ground,” Faber said. “I always felt the Democratic side does a better job knocking on doors. When I’m out doing it myself, the other people I see out are doing it for other Democrats, rarely for Republicans.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “The most physically demanding thing I’ve ever done in my life.”  That’s what Andrew Flach, Hultgren’s campaign spokesman said in a 2004 Daily Illini article about his auditions for the Chief Illiniwek role as a student, and the endurance building involved in the intense four-minute dance routine. We teased him that the 14th primary against fellow Republican Joe Walsh may soon hold that place. “It already is,” he cracked. As we’re full of videos today on the blog, here’s a fun one of the Chief’s last dance in 2007.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: CBS News asked Cain if he would take a lie detector test. Cain agreed. He did not fall back on the usual politician evasions, e.g., “I’ll take a lie detector test when my opponent takes an IQ test.”  When ancient Greek playwrights painted themselves into a corner, they often had a crane lower a pagan god onto the stage to magically resolve the drama. This device was called deus ex machina, “god from a machine.” In our increasingly godless age we put our faith in feeble science. We expect the polygraph, the lie detector, to give us veritas ex machina, “truth from a machine.” Our courts do not let this unreliable machine send people to prison. One reason, experts contend, is that some can successfully lie to a lie detector.)

From Plains Daily – In a media advisory, the Fort Totten North Dakota Spirit Lake tribe, which has been supporting the “Fighting Sioux” name for the athletic teams of the University of North Dakota- will make what it termed as a “major announcement” this morning at 10:00 from its Fort Totten North Dakota headquarters.

Updates will be forthcoming.

The announcement is – The Spirit Lake Sioux are suing the NCAA!

Some of the allegations in the suit from the grandforksherald:

– The two tribes are “indispensable parties” who were left out of negotiations leading to a 2007 settlement agreement between the state of North Dakota and the NCAA, so the agreement is void.

– The NCAA has over-reached its jurisdiction and infringed on UND’s copyright on the “Fighting Sioux” logo.

– By failing to take into account “traditions, ceremonies and religious acts that are sacred to the Sioux Nations,” including a 1969 naming ceremony at UND, the NCAA has violated the federal Indian Religious Freedom Act.

– The NCAA’s application of its policy to UND violates plaintiffs’ freedom of speech and the federal Indian Civil Rights Act.

– The NCAA’s description of “Fighting Sioux” as a “hostile and abusive” term “soiled the name and reputation of the Sioux nation” and amount to defamation.

God bless the Standing Rock Sioux.

Republican Illinois Senator Matt Murphy gave an outstanding presentation at the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) Regional Conference at the Hotel Allegro in Chicago yesterday, Friday, October 21, 2011.  I have been an AAPC member since 2001 when I served as a founding director of its Midwest Chapter.  The AAPC website is at: http://www.theaapc.org/

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE
— 11th Congressional District: Kane County clerk Jack Cunningham considers run for Congress – Jonathan Bilyk
http://www.kcchronicle.com/2011/10/21/kane-county-clerk-considers-run-for-congress/abhr3kd/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Jack Cunningham has not yet announced that he intends to run for Congress. But Cunningham, who now serves as Kane County clerk, said he is “very, very interested” in seeking the Republican nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives out of the newly created 11th Congressional District. “This would be a new district, with no existing incumbent congressman who lives in the district,” said Cunningham. “So, have I announced yet? No. “But I am watching the situation there very closely, and I am exploring my options.” Presently, Cunningham, an Aurora resident who has served as county clerk since 2002, resides within the 14th Congressional District. But under a new congressional district map crafted and approved by the Democrats who control the Illinois General Assembly, the city of Aurora and the village of North Aurora would be carved out of the current 14th District and put in a newly created 11th Congressional District. That district, shaped roughly like a “Z,” would run from Aurora and southern Kane County through Naperville and Lisle and parts of DuPage County, before zig-zagging southwest, and then return east to encompass the city of Joliet in Will County. Former U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Batavia, has said he will run in the new 11th District in the Democratic primary. He is opposed in that primary by former Aurora Township Clerk Juan Thomas and James Hickey, president of the Orland Fire Protection District. On the Republican side, Cunningham could be the first candidate to formally declare his candidacy, should he do so in coming weeks. But U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert, a Hinsdale Republican who has served in Congress since 1998 representing the 13th Congressional District, has indicated that she is strongly considering a run in the 11th District, as well, after much of her current district was moved into a newly drawn 5th Congressional District, which would be more favorable to Democrats. Should she do so, she would represent stiff competition for Cunningham, said State Rep. Randy Ramey, of Carol Stream, who serves as chairman of the DuPage County Republican Party. Ramey said he believes Biggert and other potential GOP candidates for Congress are awaiting a resolution of the court challenge brought by Illinois Republicans against the Democratic districting map. He said he expected formal announcements soon from potential candidates, like Biggert, as the candidacy filing deadlines approach for next spring’s primary elections. “There are a few people out there keeping their powder dry, so to speak, waiting to see how things shake out before deciding where to go,” Ramey said. Ramey said Cunningham could represent the area well, if elected. “He’s a conservative, and we need those in Washington,” Ramey said. He also noted that Cunningham has significant personal wealth, allowing him to “self-fund” his campaign. “I know him as a county official, and he has done well there,” Ramey said. “I don’t know how that would translate to the national level.”  Calls to Mike Kenyon, chairman of the Kane County Republican Party, and to Dick Kavanaugh, chairman of the Will County Republican Party, were not returned Friday afternoon. Cunningham said his supporters are circulating nominating petitions and he is in the process of building a campaign organization that could be “ready to move” as soon as he officially files to place his name on the ballot. Cunningham said he intends to continue to serve as Kane County clerk, even should he declare his candidacy for Congress.)

— It’s class war, but not the way some claim – Tom Suhrbur, Glen Ellyn
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20111022/discuss/710229884/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I recently came across one particularly shocking example of how the American corporations are waging class war against the working class – for profit, of course. On a recent flight, I came across a half-page advertisement in the airline’s magazine promoting capital investment in low wage labor in China. The company that took out the ad was ITI Manufacturing, a Houston-based corporation. In the ad entitled “Overseas Manufacturing Isn’t As Scary As You Think”, ITI claims that it: “will help you to take advantage of low overseas labor cost – without sacrificing the quality or reliable supply of your product.” Notice the words “low overseas labor costs.” Class war is being waged in America by the transnational corporations. The war was greatly intensified by Ronald Reagan. His program of limited government, deregulation, privatization and “free trade” has dominated the public discourse for 30 years. The choices we face today are very clear. Either we raise taxes on those who can most afford it or we take another step in driving down the standard of living for the working people by cutting social programs and public education. Either way, it is class war.)

SOUTHTOWN STAR
— No jury of peers for wealthy powerbroker Cellini – Ed Hammer  (DIERSEN: If you were put on trial, what would the profile of your peers be?  Mine would be conservative, White, male, married, no children, no pets, older, Republican, German-American, Missouri Synod Lutheran, former postal employee, former Firestone Stores employee, former IRS employee, former union member, former GAO employee, three masters degrees, six professional certifications including CPA and Certified Internal Auditor, reporter, journalist, consultant, arbitrator, federal pension recipient, Social Security recipient, Wheaton homeowner, owner of three GM cars and two Ford cars, taxpayer, forced by liberal Democrats to retire at age 49, etc.  Just kidding, but not completely.)
http://southtownstar.suntimes.com/entertainment/movies/8327336-474/no-jury-of-peers-for-wealthy-powerbroker-cellini.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The U.S. Constitution does not guarantee a trial by one’s peers, it only guarantees an impartial jury. Teachers would most certainly be partial against a defendant who is accused of defrauding their pension fund and whose businesses’ assets total more than $1 billion. The average Illinois teacher’s pension is about $41,000. If Cellini could have all peers on the jury, he might have a good chance at an acquittal. What would be the profile of a Cellini peer? Male, white, older, politically connected and rich – with a net worth somewhere between $10 million and $100 million. That description applies to less than 0.8 percent of the Illinois population, and not many of their kind are to be found in the typical jury pool. So the jury, minus teachers, still had to be drawn from regular folks, including those with union membership and other public workers. Cellini better be hoping that nobody has ever messed with their pensions.)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: With the end of DADT, Karl Johnson, formerly known as Officer X, is overjoyed that he now can admit his homosexuality without fear of reprisal.  While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, my liberal Democrat superiors and supervisors made it clear that if I admitted my conservatism, I would suffer reprisal.  Because I did admit my conservatism, I did suffer reprisal.)
